Church History

Over 100 years of ministry...

Green Level Christian Church began in the year 1876, when one of the eldest deacons donated three acres of land to build a new church. The white-framed building was constructed under the ministry of Rev. Alex Hazel. No further records about the church could be found until January 7, 1945, when Rev. Holland was the pastor of a congregation of 75 members. At that time, Green Level became affiliated with the Lincoln Christian Conference. Church meetings were held monthly on the Tuesday night before the first Sunday in August. Revival services began the first Sunday in August, Choir Anniversary on the first Sunday in October, Women’s Day on the third Sunday in October, Usher Board Anniversary in November, and Homecoming was celebrated on the first Sunday in May.

In August 1947, Rev. Holland was dismissed, and two years later, the church called Rev. Walter Howard as pastor. That began a period of change and growth under his leadership for nearly 30 years. In 1951, Rev. Howard led the construction of a new church building. There were 70 members on the rolls. Over nearly the next decade and a half, church membership increased more than 60 percent, growing to 76 in 1956 and 113 in 1964. Over the years, Green Level Christian Church maintained its affiliation with the Lincoln Christian Conference. In  January 1962, the Deacon Board decided to explore joining the United Church of Christ denomination. Five years later at its November church meeting, members voted to become Green Level United Church of Christ. In 1978, Rev. Delbert Blackwell became pastor of the church. There are no records to explain the transition from Rev. Howard to Rev. Blackwell. In August 1979, members voted to build a fellowship hall and rooms for Sunday School classes.

On April 7, 1981, Rev. Blackwell resigned as pastor, effective in sixty days on June 7, 1981. In August, Deacon Elonzo McBroom presided over the church meeting. On January 19, 1982, church members voted to ask Rev. Joseph Lovelace to become pastor. This sparked another period of change for the church. The schedule for church meetings changed from monthly to quarterly. Also, the day and time of the meetings changed to Saturday at 1:30 p.m., but on July 17, 1983, members voted to change the day and time to Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m., beginning in 1984. At this time members also expressed a desire to build a new sanctuary.

During the two-and-a-half year period from February 21, 1982, to August 24, 1984, church membership grew to 166. In November 1985, Rev. Coslow E. Holt, Jr., became pastor of the church. There have been much growth and many changes during his tenure, and chief among them has been the change in the church’s denomination. In 1999, Pastor Holt enlightened members about the views, changes and actions of the United Church of Christ (UCC). During the year, members prayed and thought about its affiliation with the UCC and what they believed and what they wanted to stand for as a church. At the last church meeting in 1999, members voted to discontinue the church’s affiliation with UCC and to once again become an independent church. On January 1, 2000, once again became Green Level Christian Church.

Later, the church joined the Evangelical Association of Reformed and Congregational Christian Churches.
